1. Wem Town FC

Although the early origins of Wem Town Football Club are unknown, it is a fact that football was being played in the town long before the outbreak of World War One.

According to sources online, the club was formed in 1883.

In 1950, Wem Town were one of twelve clubs to be invited to participate in the newly reformed Shropshire County League alongside Craven Arms Town, Dawley Athletic, Donnington Wood, Hadley CW, Lilleshall Miners, Madeley Miners, Montgomery Town, Salopian Engineers, and the reserve teams of Shrewsbury Town, Oswestry Town & Whitchurch Alport.

Wem Town ended their first campaign in seventh position, winning eight, drawing five and losing nine games, scoring 44 and conceding 46.

The Club's second season in the County competition saw them finish third in a league of ten clubs - nine points adrift of Champions Donnington Wood and two points behind second placed Lilleshall Miners.

The 1952/53 season - Wem Town's last in the league - was a disaster, with the club winning just four games and drawing one from 20 played. This saw the Wem side finish bottom with relegation resulting in a return to village football.

Wem Town found themselves back in the County League for the 1961/62 season ending third and followed this up the next season with a mid-table finish. Relegation re-occurred in 1964 with another return to local football.

The 1970's saw the rise of Wem Town Colts, with Wem Town considered a poor relative. This changed when a new division was created, elevating several clubs, including Wem Town, into a higher competition. However the standard of football diminished in the ensuing seasons with teams such as Donnington Wood, Shifnal Town, Ludlow Town & Broseley all exiting the league.

By the end of the 1988/89 season, following a seventh spot finish, Wem Town applied to join the West Midlands Regional League and were elected into their second division for the start of the 1989–90 season winning promotion to Division One at the first attempt.

Membership of the First Division, however, lasted just 4 seasons before the decision was made to resign from the league. The cost of maintaining a club at this level was becoming a financial concern for officials. The consequence of this decision caused heartache for the supporters as the club had finished 4th in the league - their highest ever placement.

A return to the County League at the start of the 1995/96 campaign saw trips to the likes of Little Drayton Rangers, but as before, the phoenix rose again and in 2008/09, Wem Town secured the Shropshire County League Premier Division Championship. With this came promotion back into the West Midlands Regional League and history repeated itself as promotion from Division 2 was achieved at the first attempt.

After nine seasons in Division One, Wem Town were crowned Division One champions at the end of the 2017–18 season.

Ahead of the 2020–21 season, the club were transferred to Division One South of the North West Counties League as the West Midlands (Regional) League lost its Premier Division as part of the National League Systems restructure. Similar to the decision some 30 years previous, club officials made the difficult decision to withdraw from the NWCL and once again joined the Premier Division of the Shropshire County League.
